AC Capacitor Replacement - DIY Step by Step

Learn how to safely discharge and replace a run or start capacitor on your air conditioner. One of the most common and fixable AC failures.

WARNING: Capacitors store dangerous electrical charge even when power is off. Always discharge before touching.

1. Turn off power at the breaker.

2. Use an insulated screwdriver to short the capacitor terminals.

3. Note wire colors and terminal labels (HERM, FAN, COM).

4. Remove the old capacitor.

5. Install the new capacitor matching microfarad and voltage ratings.

6. Reconnect wires per your notes.

7. Restore power and test.
